The Cross surname probably derives from a family living near a stone cross, whether of market, preaching, or wayside variety. Our Cross family also came from South Yorkshire.
For the record, and with the usual cautions, my oldest direct ancestors we know about in this part of the family are: John Green (1761), John Cross (1764) and Mary Earnshaw (1766).
John Green and Sarah Cross had six children in Darfield, Barnsley.
Sarah was born in 1787, John may have been much older. The children were:
42.1.1 - Harriet Green (1814)
42.1.2 - George Green (1816)
42.1.3 - Susannah Green (1818)
42.1.4 - William Green (1823)
42.1.5 - Edmund Green (1826)
42.1.6 - Samuel Green (1830)
More on these individuals in Chapter 42.
John died in 1845, and left a will, which is long and difficult to read.
For more on Barnsley, see Chapter 18.
