- John is no known relative. He had three children from a previous marriage, one of whom - Mark Green (1877) - was with John and Ann in 1901.
- John was a labourer (steel works?), and they live at 248 Petre Street, East Brightside, Sheffield. This road is now an industrial estate.
- 1911: No. 250. Labourer in armour at plate mills. This would have been at the nearby Grimesthorpe Ordnance Works established by Charles Cammell (his third appearance in these pages). This mill was powered by one of the most powerful steam engines in the world - the 12,000 HP River Don Engine - which survives at the Kelham Island Industrial Museum. One of the tools this drove was a 4000 ton press, which made armour plating for tanks and Dreadnought battleships. John probably started making armour plating towards the end of John de Gruchy's career as a builder of warships in Portsmouth. Ian Buixton and Ian Johnson confirm in The Battleship Builders that the plate was transported by rail - 2634 tons of it between 4 and 9 inches thick for HMS Lion built at Devonport in 1910, for example.
