53.4 Siblings of Harriet Squire (née Green)

William and Mary Green had nine children, mainly in Stainborough nr Barnsley. Their children are Harriet's siblings.
  • 53.2.1 - John Green (1849-1918)
    • 1871: At home in Ecclesfield. Manager at his father's iron foundry
    • His father died the following year, and John took over the business
    • Married Annie Nelstrop (1847-1917) at St Cuthbert, Ackworth nr Pontefract in 1879
    • He is still an ironfounder; also a farmer of 43 acres. In 1891-1911, the address is given as Primrose Cottage. The 'cottage' is big enough to share with one of his worker's family in 1901. He specifically says that their business is Ranges and stove grates in 1911.

    • Married Emily Nelstrop (1850-1879) on the same day in 1879 that his brother John married her sister Annie. Sadly, she didn't survive the year, presumably dying in childbirth.
    • Children:
      • Robert Green (1879)
    • 1881: At the Norfolk Works. Ironfounder, employing 110 men and boys. His late wife's sister Catherine (sic) is there.

      • Francis Nelstop Green (1892)
    • 1891: Brook House. 1901 Eeue [Yew!] Lane - MD of the foundry, a claim which John also makes - had they split the business? 1911: Brook House. MD, stove and grate works. Kept a servant or two.

    • 1911: Now an ironmonger (dealer). Living at Newfield, Entry Hill [Drive], Bath, Somerset. Kept a servant. The house is a villa in Tudor Gothic style, and now a listed building worth £800k. Entry Hill is the hill by which one enters Bath from the south. Entry Hill Drive is no entry - no drive for Street View. My photos of Bath are here.
    • The Edinburgh Gazette of 1911 tells us that his place of business was 112 Victoria Street, Bristol. And that he went bankrupt in that year.

      • Mary Green (1900)
      • Letitia Marjorie Green (1903)
    • 1911: 20 Shrewsbury Road. Cutlery manufacturer. 1939: 17 Causeway Head Road.
    • There are not many references on line to Walter as a cutlery but there is a suggestion that he may have also made cut throat razors. And there is a short piece here:

"The MOP Penknife by Walter Green Ltd is the most interesting. I think [the] company was established around 1911, Walter Green having previously been a partner in Green & Green Ltd, who by coincidence used the seated grinder mark later acquired by Herbert Robinson. Walter Green Ltd folded in the early 1940s. The knife carries advertising for George Craddock & Co Ltd, who began manufacturing wire ropes in Wakefield in 1853, and merged into British Ropes Ltd when the company was formed in 1924."

More on these individuals in Chapter 59.
