James and Margaret Waddilove had ten children in London. There is a possibility that two families are conflated here, but the records do not seem to support this. Their children were Edward Brittain's siblings and first cousins.

- Pietermaritzburg (aka umGungundlovu) was founded by the Voortrekkers (refugees), following the Battle of Blood River.

- Britain took over Pietermaritzburg in 1843 (only ten years before Amelia's marriage) and it became the seat of the Natal Colony's administration.
