Military losses on both sides were enormous: 900 aircraft split about evenly (including 43 Spitfires lost in the month Louisa died); the Axis powers lost 2300 merchant ships, the Royal Navy a battleship, two aircraft carriers, five cruisers, 19 destroyers (2 of allies) and 38 submarines.

The Little family still owned Thames sailing barges. There is good article on the part the barges played in Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk evacuation, and a shorter one which lists them. Thirty or so made the trip under sail alone. Many did not survive. One of the Littles', though, has survived until today.
Glenway was built in 1913 by James Little of Rochester for the coasting trade, and worked with a 2,000 strong fleet of barges to ferry cargoes from the East Coast into the port of London. Sailing unscathed through the minefields and dangers of World War One, she survived the economic depression of the 1930s and a grounding ashore off North Norfolk. She was then requisitioned as a supply ship and left abandoned on the beaches of Dunkirk during the 1940 evacuation. 213 soldiers from the 27th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, managed to get onboard and, after a desperate attempt to re-float her, they sailed home. (Thames Barge). The BBC have a recording of the appeal for boating skills broadcast on 29 May 1940.

Pratt, Alfred John (19 Apr 1921). Served in the New Zealand infantry.
Killed in action 20 Mar 1944, Cassino, Lazio, Italy
At the Battle of Monte Cassino (see Italian Wikipedia), the 6th New Zealand Brigade attacked the Italian town of Cassino on 15 March as part of the advance on Rome. 343 New Zealanders died across four attacks. Troops had been waiting three weeks in freezing rain for suitable weather for an aerial assault: when it came, Cassino was reduced to a pile of rubble. The ancient Abbey of Monte Cassino, where St. Benedict first established the Rule that ordered monasticism in the west, had already been destroyed. Allied armour and infantry faced stiff resistance and were held up as flooded bomb craters turned the rubble into a morass. Communications were difficult and progress was slow. One battalion managed to seize Castle Hill, but attack lost its impetus. Over the next eight days more troops entered Cassino, but they were unable to make any headway until reinforcements broke the impasse on 18 May. (See NZ History)
