Ian flew with the RCAF as a fighter pilot and flying ace, and awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. He was involved in the defence of Malta during the siege. He crash-landed a Spitfire in enemy territory and was captured and imprisoned in Stalag Luft III, of Great Escape fame. He escaped in 1945. He later became a successful architect, specialising in affordable housing, and described as "a distinguished architect who has done much to improve the quality of housing design in Canada." (Wikipedia). He was a driving force behind the Habitat 67 project in Montréal.
Bruce was the Wireless operator on RCAF Lancaster bombers. He was killed on 31 Mar 1945 when his plane was shot down by a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter while targeting the U-Boat manufacturing yards of Voss near Hamburg, Germany. His plane was in a wave unprotected by a fighter escort, and was attacked by a swarm of 30 Me 262 fighters, with heavy calibre guns, which destroyed the nose and cockpit of Bruce's plane. He is buried at Becklingen War Cemetery in Lower Saxony.

Herbert served as a Flying Officer with 514 Squadron of the RAF in WWII. He was awarded the DFC:
"Flying Officer Ronald Frederick LIMBERT (143269), R.A.F.V.R., 514 Sqn. Flying Officer Herbert Leslie HALLAM (106323.), R.A.F.V.R., 514 Sqn. As pilot and navigator respectively Flying Officers Limbert and Hallam have completed many sorties and have displayed commendable skill and courage throughout. In November, 1944, they took part in an attack on a synthetic oil plant at Dortmund. Whilst over the target the aircraft sustained extensive damage. In spite of this, Flying Officer Limbert completed his bombing run and afterwards flew the badly damaged bomber to an airfield near the English coast and effected a safe landing. Throughout, the homeward flight he received the greatest assistance from his navigator Flying Officer Hallam who proved himself to be an invaluable member of aircraft crew. Most of his navigational instruments had been destroyed but he plotted his way home with unfailing accuracy. In circumstances of much danger Flying Officers Limbert and Hallam displayed great coolness, resolution and devotion to duty." London Gazette No. 36889, Dated 1945-01-12
On 21 Nov 1944, he took part, as Navigator, in a bombing raid from RAF Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire to Hamburg-Rhenania, in which 476 tons of bombs were dropped. On the same day 366 B-24 bombers targeted Hamburg oil refineries but cloud cover limited accuracy: the borough of Harburg was devastated. Herbert was killed when his Lancaster III LM684 JI-C crashed 1 km NW of Moers. He is buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
