61.4 - 1939 Directory of the Larard (Knight) Family

Through the Trees: Knight (see Part a for LarardLittleMousley )
England and Wales records are from the 1939 Register; others are best estimates.

The Knight family were based in Norwood, South London. Indeed, the epicentre is known as Knight's Hill, after a Knight family, who are quite likely to be distant ancestors. The iconic local building, the Crystal Palace, burned down in November 1936. Sir Henry Buckland, chair of the trustees, said, "In a few hours we have seen the end of the Crystal Palace. Yet it will live in the memories not only of Englishmen, but the whole world". 100,000 people came to Sydenham Hill to watch the blaze, among them Winston Churchill, who said, "This is the end of an age".

Like most of London, Norwood, Thornton Heath, Penge and Croydon suffered from aerial bombing during WWII. There is a zoomable map at Bomb Site of where the bombs fell. These residential areas suffered particularly from V1 and V2 flying bombs - see Flying Bombs & Rockets for details of where these struck. V1 rockets were 'doodlebugs', their engines pulsated until the dreadful silence as they ran out of fuel. With the later supersonic V2 missiles, those beneath heard the explosion before the engine noise. 344 flying bombs fell on houses in the neighbourhoods (CR, SE17+ and SW2/16 postcodes), and 712 people were killed. 1600 houses were destroyed in the Borough of Lambeth, and 35,000 were repaired during the war. Properties were requisitioned and people billeted in Lambeth Rest Centres, and other people's homes. Among the streets badly impacted were Tivoli Road. Gipsy Hill and St Clouds Road. At Knights Hill Square, the charcoal burners' cottages, which had survived the interwar expansion of the area, were destroyed. St Luke's Church, scene of dozens of family baptisms and marriages, was damaged; nearby Georgian homes destroyed. Norwood Cottage Hospital was damaged; so was the Cemetery.
