Joined Royal Naval Air Service at Felixstowe, an important flying boat port and development centre, looking after kite balloons.

"During the Atlantic U-boat campaign of World War I, kite balloons would be deployed by a destroyer escorting a convoy of merchant ships. A basket suspended below the kite balloon held a pilot who watched for U-boats and notified the destroyer of his observations by telephone via the insulated core of the kite balloon tether cable. The elevated balloon pilot had a clearer view of a submerged U-boat than was available from shipboard locations; and the kite balloon pilot could notify the ship of the U-boat's evasive manoeuvres during a depth charge attack." On 4 July 1917, he was "killed by bombs dropped by an enemy aeroplane". This was an air raid by Gotha bombers. As defences against Zeppelins improved, Gothas carried out the first air raids by aircraft on Britain which caused damage: 25 May 1917. 23 panes diverted from London to Folkestone due to cloud conditions and killed 95. A second attack in June was diverted to Sheerness, and a third killed 162 in London. The fourth was on Harwich and Felixstowe, and killed James, and two naval colleagues. There were three final daylight raids before improved air defences caused a shift to night raids.

These raids caused widespread fear, panic and revulsion. The Smuts Report was commissioned and led to the foundation of the RAF. The royal family rebranded from Saxe-Coburg to Windsor.

People were killed on the shore and on other ships; 352 people were killed; severed heads were found on the Isle of Grain. A Court of Inquiry heard that priming of the mines was being carried out hurriedly and by untrained personnel; worryingly George was a probationary armourer.
