  • Myitkyina was the site of a major airport. One survivor of the camp wrote:
"I have written this because I feel it should be told, I owe it to my grandparents, my uncle, and my brother who all died at the hands of the Japs. I owe it to my father, who died some years after the war, broken in health and spirit, and who never recovered from the cruelties and privations meted out to him by our captors. I owe it to my mother, who nursed him continuously and tirelessly for the remainder of his life and who still has nightmares, waking at night, weeping and afraid. I owe it to the countless numbers who died in the camps, or afterwards, as a direct result of the way they were treated. I owe it to myself, for the childhood and innocence stolen from me. I owe it to future generations who deserve to know exactly what happened before the warped apologists and modish ‘revisionists’ change history to suit their own politics. Most of all I owe it to those wonderful men who risked and even sacrificed their lives to save mine. (Celia on SWWEC)

The first site of the Le Brun bakery (formally established in 1824) still exists (as a coffee shop). The business was purchased in 1938 by Ralph Le Marquand, brother of Senator John Le Marquand, and the bakery was expanded after WWII. The business moved to Columbus Street, and Brighton Road. After his father's death in 1974, the firm was continued by Brian Le Marquand. The premises were subject to a compulsory purchase order in the 1980s in order to move the business from the residential area to a St Saviour industrial estate. In 2007, it was purchased by Sandpiper Group and, at some point, it become "Island Bakery". Its final incarnation was as the "CI Bakery", which closed in 2013, the victim of modern food processing and 'loss leading' by the supermarkets.
